The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) has today announced the appointment of Liz Atkins as the new director of public policy.

Ms Atkins, who is former director of strategy and communications at the National Housing Federation, will lead the organisation’s 45-strong team from January 15th 2007.

Her main responsibilities will involve covering campaigns, campaigning effectiveness, policy, research and partnerships work. She will also be expected to maximise recognition of the importance of the voluntary sector.

Ms Atkins spoke of her eagerness to begin her new role, saying: “I’m delighted to be joining NCVO at such an exciting time for the voluntary and community sector.

“The sector makes an enormous difference to the lives of society’s most marginalised individuals and communities and government is increasingly keen to harness its added value.”

The NCVO is a registered charity founded in 1919 and has a growing membership of over 4,800 voluntary groups.
