Public sector equality scheme gains speed

Communities and local government secretary Ruth Kelly, who is also the minister for women and equality, has stepped up a new initiative designed to reduce the gender pay gap.

Since September last year, more than 100 organisation and companies from around the UK have signed up to the Exemplar Employer plan, committing to a series of schemes that should help women achieve higher salaries and better positions in the public sector.

Projects include steps to support part-time staff, to help mothers return to work after maternity leave and to encourage women to apply for positions and opt for professions that are traditionally the preserve of men.

As part of fulfilling this aim, Ms Kelly has invited organisations to bid for a new Quality Part-Time Work Fund.

“Just because a woman trades down her hours does not means she should have to trade down her status,” said the minister for women. “The best employers understand the hard-headed business reasons for extending quality flexible and part-time roles for women.

“As take up for the Exemplar Employer scheme proves, there is a huge appetite for change.”

A report by the Women and Work Commission indicates that flexible working will help more women to achieve more senior roles in the public and third sectors.
