Waverley council project named best in EU
Waverley Borough Council has been awarded a top European award this week, for a project designed to encourage awareness of decision-making.
The project, called eParticipate, was voted the European Union’s Ten Project of the Year 2006, awarding Waverley Borough Council a prestigious accolade.
Using new web casting technology, eParticipate allows local residents and businesses to watch council meetings and events at a convenient time to them. eParticipate also allows feedback facilities, online consultation, and the ability to provide contextual information.
Commenting on the advantages of the project Cllr Gill Ferguson, leader of Waverley, said: “The internet is an increasingly popular way of gathering information and news, so making council meetings available to everyone who has access to the internet is part of making local democracy more accessible.”
Councillor Ferguson also encouraged residents who were not already involved to log on to Waverley’s website where “you can see decisions being made as they actually happen and see how local matters are debated and determined”.
This is the third year the award has been running after it was set up in 2004 as a communication action to help the increase the impact of such projects.
