Planners flood risk advice released

Posted in News on the February 22nd, 2007

A draft guide, to help planners better understand how to use planning policy to manage flood risks, was published today.

The guide was released in consideration of the fact that climate change is increasingly affecting traditional weather patterns - meaning that widespread flooding could become a more common occurrence.

It is a ‘living draft’ of Practice Guide Companion to Planning Policy Statement 25 (PPS25) - and its creators say it will aid planners apply PPS25 policy and will “help create consistency” in the implementation of PPS25 across the country.

“This Practice Guide will be central to the successful delivery of the new PPS25. Recent extreme weather conditions have shown how vital it is that strategic plans taking flood risk into account become a core part of the planning process,” Baroness Andrews, Lords minister for planning, commented.

“Consulting on the guide will also provide an opportunity to further develop effective tools to make PPS25 policy work in practice, particularly by improving flood risk assessment at all levels of the planning system.

“Key stakeholders have already made clear the value of such a guide and I look forward to hearing further views.”

Communities and Local Government is planning a series of nationwide workshops, to assist planners in the comprehension of PPS25.
