Councils continue to deliver better services

Posted in News on the February 28th, 2007

The vast majority of single tier authorities and county councils in the UK improved their services delivery in 2006, despite more stringent performance testing.

Local government watchdog the Audit Commission announced that 79 per cent of single tier and county councils achieved a two-star rating last year, with none now in the bottom category of the hardest demanding Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) yet.

Performance slipped in only seven councils nationwide, with just five authorities on a one-star rating.

“Once again, councils have demonstrated a desire and an ability to deliver better services for local people,” said Audit Commission chairman Michael O’Higgins.

“CPA – the Harder Test was introduced to raise the bar for councils and the 2006 results show that they continue to rise to the challenge. CPA has proved that it is possible for councils in all parts of the country, facing many different challenges, to make substantial improvements year-on-year,” he added.

Local improvements have been most marked in the north-east, where three-quarters of single tier and county councils achieved the top four-star rating in 2006.
