Petition aims to save Gloucester psychiatric unit

A petition aimed at saving a psychiatric unit has garnered more than 3,000 signatures.

Holly House in Gloucester was marked for closure because of health cutbacks, the BBC reports.

However, the petition will be handed in to county councillors and may help to determine the future of the building.

Gloucester Labour MP Parmjit Dhanda said that the purpose of the building would change but it would stay open. The petition calls for it to remain as a psychiatric unit.

Meanwhile, health workers in Hackney, east London, have called for a mass demonstration on March 3rd to protest at changes being made in the NHS.

Gill George, a health worker with City and Hackney Primary Care Trust told the Hackney Gazette: “The NHS is fighting for its life and services are melting away with a speed that is frightening.

“It’s a fight that we can’t afford to lose, which is why I am calling for a borough-wide demonstration on March 3rd.”
