Scottish Executive to meet efficiency targets

The Scottish Executive is on line to meet its ‘efficient government’ target of £1.5 billion in efficiency gains by 2007/08.

Finance and public service reform minister Tom McCabe made the announcement as he published the latest Efficient Government technical notes. (more…)

Audit contracts won by private firms

Two private firms, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers, have been awarded audit contracts from the Audit Commission.

The contracts, which have a projected value of £13 million, will run for five years from April 2009. (more…)

Councils shortlisted for unitary status

Sixteen Councils have been shortlisted to be considered for unitary status, local government minister Phil Woolas today announced.

Giving councils unitary status could save up to £200 million a year, it is thought, with money saved from the scheme being directly transferred into improving front line services and to reduce council tax bills. (more…)

Housing Corporation chief set for Croydon role

Housing Corporation chief executive Jon Rouse is to be installed as the new chief executive of the London Borough of Croydon.

At the age of 38, Mr Rouse will become one of the youngest leading figures ever installed at a major unitary authority as well as only the sixth chief executive of Croydon in the past 70 years. (more…)

Calls to move reliability up the civil service agenda

"High reliability" must become the goal of government departments to avoid the "failure tolerant" culture that can occur within organisations, according to David Tranfield from the National School of Government.

He told National School head of strategy, Bob MacLennan, that there was too much focus on cost reduction which lowers morale and results in organisational failures. (more…)
