West Sussex councils face £500,000 merger decision

Adur and Worthing councils in West Sussex could save to the tune of half a million pounds each year by merging their operations, according to estimates.

Councillors from both local areas will meet to decide whether to progress with plans for a proposed union on March 15th, after a report from consultancy firm Capita confirmed that a single set of officials would be able to run the operations of the proposed joint authority.

Capitalising on efficiency benefits highlighted by the Gershon initiative, the combined operation could make savings in excess of £500,000 each year.

Worthing Borough Council councillor Keith Mercer is backing the proposals, having observed the benefits of a joint refuse and recycling service between the communities.

"For some time now we have been urging officers to press on with efficiency savings from joint working, so it is completely logical for us to be considering this proposal now," he said.

Adur District Council councilor Neil Parkin concurs, having announced: "These innovative proposals are progressively improving our efficiency and helping both areas to face up to the huge challenges ahead."

Should councillors back plans at this stage, further decisions in July could kick-start the appointment of senior managers to serve both boroughs.
