Councils shortlisted for unitary status

Sixteen Councils have been shortlisted to be considered for unitary status, local government minister Phil Woolas today announced.

Giving councils unitary status could save up to £200 million a year, it is thought, with money saved from the scheme being directly transferred into improving front line services and to reduce council tax bills.

Affordability, strong leadership and improved public services, as well as the empowering of local communities, were among the key criteria sought by the selection panel, which considered 26 proposals.

Local Government Minister Phil Woolas said: "The bids that local authorities submitted show that they are up for improving the services they offer to their communities by making them more responsive, effective and efficient.

"We have been impressed by their quality, value for money and their cross section of support which is why we can now go much further and proceed to the next stage in thirteen area," he added.

The shortlisted proposals will now be subject to a 12-week government consultation before a final decision is made in July.
