Minister to improve council efficiency

Posted in News on the March 28th, 2007

A new package aimed at improving the running of councils has been launched by Communities and Local Government Department.

The Business Improvement Package (BIP) aims to improve efficiency by bringing about more straightforward management methods and joining up services.

Phil Woolas, local government minister, said: "Everyone wants to see improvements to their local services, however in order to deliver the transformed services and value for money that communities want, local authority leaders will have to challenge methods of delivery."

Mr Woolas pointed to the success of online secondary school applications. He said: "In the London Borough of Hackney, 81 per cent of parents and carers applied for secondary school places for their children online."

A key method of improving operations will be the sharing of success stories of efficiency across the country. This will be achieved through building communication networks between local authorities.

The development of the strategy will be consulted through local authority-focused regional events over the coming months.
