Audit contracts won by private firms

Two private firms, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers, have been awarded audit contracts from the Audit Commission.

The contracts, which have a projected value of £13 million, will run for five years from April 2009.

It is thought that they will save more than £30 million over the next five years.

This is the commission’s second round of awards. Last year £29 million worth of contracts were awarded to four firms: Deloitte, KPMG, PKF and Robson Rhodes.

Chief executive of the Audit Commission, Steve Bundred, said: "We have demonstrated our commitment to creating and maintaining a competitive market in public sector audit.

"We will work closely with the successful firms to ensure that audited bodies continue to receive high-quality audits. Through our major procurement exercises we have succeeded in our aim to obtain high-quality audits at lower prices", he added.

The Audit Commission is responsible for ensuring that public money is spent economically and efficiently while achieving high quality public services.

The body has sent letters to all the firms involved in its competitive procurement.
