Scottish Executive to meet efficiency targets

Posted in News on the March 30th, 2007

The Scottish Executive is on line to meet its ‘efficient government’ target of £1.5 billion in efficiency gains by 2007/08.

Finance and public service reform minister Tom McCabe made the announcement as he published the latest Efficient Government technical notes.

A total of £1.47 billion in annually-recurring efficiency projects have already been identified, which is £425 million ahead of the original target.

The Scottish Executive said that all efficiency gains - made by measures such as reducing waste, tackling duplication and bureaucracy - will be invested in improving public service delivery.

Mr McCabe said: "With one year still remaining to the target date, we have already identified £1,470 million of the £1,500 million in efficiency gains, with further gains currently being identified. … I remain very confident that we will reach £1,500 million by April 2008.

"All of the money we save through measures such as better procurement, streamlining processes and better use of resources will be ploughed back into producing world-class public services for the people of Scotland", he added.

The efficiency gain made by each project will be reported in the annual outturn report published in September.
