West Sussex councils face £500,000 merger decision

Adur and Worthing councils in West Sussex could save to the tune of half a million pounds each year by merging their operations, according to estimates.

Councillors from both local areas will meet to decide whether to progress with plans for a proposed union on March 15th, after a report from consultancy firm Capita confirmed that a single set of officials would be able to run the operations of the proposed joint authority. (more…)

Local authorities face equal pay “challenge”

Local authorities could be forced to use back-pay to rectify inequalities in council worker wages, according to council leaders.

Public sector council workers do not all receive equal pay and authorities are being urged to sign up to legal reforms through which unions and employers can agree on salaries and reimbursements via a process of arbitration. (more…)

NLGN calls for greater local responsibility and accountability

Greater local leadership could be achieved if regional development agencies (RDAs) were upgraded to regional executive agencies (REAs) and held to greater account by both communities and the government.

Such is the conclusion of a new report by the New Local Government Network (NLGN), which recommends that ministers oversee regional strategies and scrutinise their work in a process whereby successful agencies are rewarded with greater autonomy. (more…)
