More part-time opportunities for women in the public sector

The minister for women, Ruth Kelly, is to push for more quality part-time jobs for women working in the public sector.

Nearly £500,000 is to be spent creating more senior part-time jobs and reducing the gender-based pay gap with the introduction of the Quality Part Time Work Fund.

Ms Kelly made the announcement as she visited a Royal Mail sorting office which will receive £25,000 to develop part-time managerial posts at two sites in London.

Other projects include a scheme to recruit more part-time senior female investigators at Durham Constabulary and a national job-share register.

Ms Kelly, said: "The part-time pay gap is still too wide with women working part-time earning 40 per cent less than men working full-time.

"Working with a range of employers across business, local government and the voluntary sector, we can kick start the process of enabling more women to work part-time in senior posts.

"This fund is designed to show employers that women can balance climbing the career ladder with their home lives", she added.

A survey last year from GMB found that the region with highest proportion of women working part-time is the Western Isles, at 54 per cent of its female workforce.

Hackney had the lowest proportion, at 17 per cent.
