A quarter of fire and rescue authorities score top marks

A quarter of fire and rescue authorities (FRAs) have been rated ‘excellent’ for the way they respond to emergencies and prevent fires, deaths and injuries.

The Audit Commission’s Fire and Rescue Performance Assessments placed just under half of FRAs in the top two categories of good or excellent overall.

The ratings aim to judge fire prevention and emergency response procedures, as well as how effectively services are improving and whether they provide value for money.

Criticisms were that some FRAs are showing difficulty taking up new guidelines which emphasise fire prevention.

Chairman of the Audit Commission Michael O’Higgins said: "Nationally, there are fewer fires, deaths and injuries than there have been for nearly 50 years.

"But there is still work to be done as fire and rescue authorities refocus their attention from reactive services towards preventative measures that stop fires happening in the first place", he added.

Another recommendation was that FRA workforces need to better represent the diversity of the communities they serve.

There are 47 fire and rescue authorities in England serving 50 million people.
