Alternative solution to unitary Somerset authority
An alternative solution has been published to the proposals put forward by the County Council for a unitary Somerset Authority.
The Team Somerset Outline Business Case has set out plans for a scheme that would see all local authorities in Somerset work together to offer enhanced services and value for money to residents without forming in to a single entity.
It is hoped that the scheme would achieve almost £8 million in savings within two years and annual improvements of over £22 million from 2012.
"It is amazing that a huge unitary authority for the whole of Somerset should even be considered," said Duncan McGinty , the leader of Sedgemoor District Council.
"Somerset’s diversity and sparsity of communities lends itself to retention of the present two tier system with dedicated and committed officers and members with the resources to deliver what is best for individual areas."
The Team Somerset scheme is believed to have the support of all the county’s district councils.
