Rural councillors’ consultation extended

Posted in News on the April 23rd, 2007

The Commission for Rural Councillors has announced the extension of a consultation in to the strengthening of the role of rural councillors.

The date for submissions has now been expanded to June 8th, allowing more evidence to be gathered to support calls for rural councillors and governments to have more influence on decisions taken in their region.

It is hoped that the information will help to promote a number of delivery ideas being put forward to the government and major organisations as well as better help councillors make use of their existing powers as well as their new responsibilities.

"We’re keen to hear from rural councillors and parish clerks, community groups, local partnerships, council officials, business associations and everyone with ideas and experience they want to share," said the commission in a statement.

According to the commission, almost half of people in the countryside do not believe they can influence local decisions.
