Selby council argues against unitary bid

Selby district council has been arguing against a unitary bid which could see North Yorkshire county council take over the services it runs.

The council plans to hold two meetings this month to raise awareness of how residents, businesses and community organisations would be affected by the unitary plan.

It has joined forces with other district and borough councils across North Yorkshire in its ‘awareness-raising’ endeavour.

Leader of Selby district council, councillor Mark Crane, said: "We don’t believe that having all council services delivered by a single authority based in Northallerton is best for residents or businesses in our district.

"Selby District Council delivers a number of key local services based on local need.

"It cannot be in the district’s interests to be run by an authority based 55 miles away from Selby town centre," he added.

The meetings will be held on May 17th in Tadcaster and on May 21st in Selby.
