Hand assets to communities, councils told

Posted in News on the May 18th, 2007

Councils are being encouraged to hand over assets to communities, giving local people greater control over how facilities are run.

Disused swimming baths, pubs and community centres, as well as redundant police stations, old hospitals and empty shopping parades, should all be handed over to local communities, according to a government report out today.

Entitled Making Assets Work, the report argues that such a move would lead to more responsive services and create more confident communities with greater civic cohesion.

Author of the report and chief executive of Lewisham council Barry Quirk said:

"Community ownership can bring people from different backgrounds together; it can foster a sense of belonging and play a role in enhancing the local environment, alleviating poverty and raising people’s aspirations.

"Fundamentally, it’s about giving people a bigger stake in the future of their area to improve the quality of life in local communities.

"We want every local authority to seize this opportunity to make a positive difference to their communities by making their assets work," he added.
