Cornwall council seeks views over unitary proposal

Cornwall county council is seeking the views of the public over a proposal to create one unified council for Cornwall.

Households across the county will this week receive a leaflet outlining the proposal and asking for individuals to send in their views.

The county’s six district councils will be replaced by one single council, should the restructuring go ahead.

According to Cornwall county council, the proposal would save money, improve services and create a stronger voice for Cornwall as it seeks more devolved power.

The proposal also involves the establishing of 16 community networks across Cornwall.

Liberal Democrat councillor David Whalley said: "We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to unite Cornwall and create a stronger, more local, more efficient, greener and more accessible council that will really work for local people.

"Our leaflet provides people with the key information they need to make an informed choice.

"I would ask everyone who is interested in working together to create a new future for Cornwall to take the time to read the leaflet and send us their views," he added.

The government will make a final decision on the proposal in July.
