Newcastle improves on tax collection
Newcastle city council has succeeded in improving its council tax collection rates.
The council beat its performance target by collecting over 95 per cent of council tax (95.4 per cent) for 2006-07.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s National Non-Domestic Rates Revenues team has recovered 98.3 per cent of tax dues.
The Pay Bills team also achieved an 89.3 per cent success rate in its attempts to secure payment of invoices within 30 days of receipt, beating its target of 88 per cent.
In addition, outstanding debt exceeding 90 days was reduced by just under £2.3 million.
Executive member for Modernisation, Transformation and Regulation, Anita Lower, said: "This is fractionally shorter than the target of 95.5 per cent but is still the best ever council tax collection we’ve had in Newcastle.
"This is one of the best in recent years so well done to the team for their hard work," she added.
Newcastle now has plans to launch a new automated tax payment service via the internet.
