The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has published its sustainable development indicators to highlight Britain’s progress in tackling key issues such as housing, health, jobs, crime, education and the environment.

Man U announces charity partnerships
Manchester United has announced its intention to partner six UK charities under a three-year agreement.
The charities, which will become the club’s preferred network partners for charity work in the UK, include the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Children’s Society on a national basis and Francis House Children’s Hospice, the New Manchester Children’s Hospital Appeal, Rainbow House and Christies Hospital from the north-west region. Wigan council ‘aiding independent living’
Wigan Council’s Supporting People programme has "promising" prospects for improvement, according to an independent report by the Audit Commission.
The £7.6 million initiative provides housing-related support to vulnerable people to enable them to live independently in a stable environment and is part of a long-term government public sector policy.
In the Audit Commission report, Wigan Council’s Supporting People scheme, which has been running for three years, was given a two-star ‘good’ rating out of a possible three stars for delivering high-quality and strategically planned housing-related services. Continue reading…
Developers ‘must progress land more swiftly’
Developers in Britain are being urged to bring land forward more quickly in order to help address housing shortages and increase the nation’s housing stock.
Ministers have stressed the importance of bringing land forward for housing, earmarking more brownfield land for development and preventing developers from ‘land banking’ suitable sites with planning permission.
A raft of new measures to boost provision of new housing in the UK have been outlined in the government’s housing green paper, including plans to build millions of new homes across the country, potentially increasing the number of planning jobs in Britain. Continue reading…
Acevo consortium wins third sector innovation contract
A new pilot designed to bolster third sector involvement in public services has seen a consortium including The Innovation Unit, Acevo and Headshift awarded a £1.2 million contract.
The decision was unveiled by Phil Hope, third sector minister, who is involved with overseeing charities, the voluntary sector, not-for-profit organisations and non-governmental organisations.
Mr Hope said that the new Innovation Exchange - which is designed to improve innovation in the sector - was an ambitious programme which would aim to bring network partners together. Continue reading…
