NGLN: Galvanise decision-making in the public sector

Posted in News on the July 30th, 2007

Public sector decision-making is the subject of a new publication from the New Local Government Network (NLGN), which says leaders need to be "galvanised" to improve their skills.

In an essay published by the NLGN, which includes contributors such as MP Nick Raynsford and the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, discussion of how to improve the talent pools at local level is outlined.

Entitled The Age of Regions? Rethinking governance in England, the report expresses sentiments that there are positive changes and recommendations in the Sub National Review.

Chris Leslie, director of the NGLN, said that it was essential that changes were made "to galvanise local authority leaders into stronger ownership of the regional stage".

Among the key initiatives is to try to confer greater authority on local leaders to enact change and determine their own regional forum.

The NGLN is also calling for a decision to be made on how budgets will be set and allocated down the chain in light of the changes to regional decision-making.
