Today, local government minister John Healey pushed the process forward with the release of the Council’s Proposals for Unitary Local Government: An Approach to Implementation discussion paper.

"New unitary authorities will deliver more effective, responsive and efficient services for their communities and save around £150 million per year which can be used to directly improve front line services or to reduce council tax bills," Mr Healey explained.

He added that CLG had been working with experts since March in order to ensure that the implementation took place as smoothly as possible.

The paper includes comment on talent pools and recruitment issues such as employment rights and staff transfers.

CLG has also been heavily involved in sourcing funding for flood-hit local authorities and on Monday announced the submission of an application for support from the European Union Solidarity Fund in order to address the damage.
