Marketing and education ‘key to public sector development’
Educating potential talent pools about the advantages and opportunities of working in the public sector will be vital to its ongoing success, according to a new report.
Conducted by analysts Badenoch and Clark, the report argues that effective marketing of roles such as through e-recruitment will help to develop the sector as it continues to work with and compete with private enterprises.
According to the firm, one area in which the private sector may have taken a lead is in marketing potential career paths to those heading into the job market.
Meanwhile, the development of qualifications such as degrees which naturally channel people into public sector jobs is still in its infancy, the company reports.
"The public sector has much to offer new recruits. Our research indicates that education, engagement and marketing are the tools which will enable them to see clearly the opportunities on offer," Badenoch and Clark concludes.
Recently, 20 local authorities across the north-east of England joined forces with network partners, talent management firm JGP, in order to ensure that their staff have the skills to provide high levels of service.
The authorities are using JGP’s skills portal to conduct an audit of the abilities both of key middle managers and of customer service staff, with the intention of ensuring strong service and improving employee retention.
Mark Henderson, chief executive of Northumberland county council, said: "Middle managers are tomorrow’s leaders and are critical to organisational success. They will make or break initiatives, so investment in them is vital for the future of public services in the north-east which is why this work is essential."
