Audit Commission ‘would set up housing standards office’

Posted in News on the September 13th, 2007

A new Office for Housing Standards would be created if the Audit Commission were to take up the role of regulator for social housing, it has announced.

Individuals in talent pools for housing jobs, or those looking to create good talent management structures in the sector, may be interested to read that the commission argued against the creation of a separate organisation to regulate social housing.

The office would report to a new housing standards board, members of which would be drawn from the Audit Commission, its network partners and other representatives of tenants and other stakeholders.

Steve Bundred, chief executive of the Audit Commission, said: "We see this as fitting in well with our broader role in assessing how councils and others deliver for people at the local level."

He added that best practice from regulatory regimes across the housing domain would be encouraged while streamlining processes and delivering improved value for money.

The Audit Commission reviews the performance of local authorities on a wide range of issues including housing, care services and environmental management.
