Engagement and motivation ‘essential to the public sector’
A new report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has called on public sector managers to focus more attention on engaging and motivating their employees.
Entitled Fit for Business II: Transforming HR in the Public Sector, the report is based on continuing research into the challenges that public sector organisations face when transforming the HR function.
Findings from the study place public sector managers as responsible for engaging employees so sustainable efficiencies can be achieved despite reductions in manpower.
Commenting on the report, Mike Emmott, CIPD employee relations adviser, said: "High levels of performance and customer service rely on a motivated and committed workforce. But the government’ s HR reform agenda seems largely to ignore employee engagement."
He went on to reference wider research that suggested that public sector employees are likely to have less confidence in their managers than their private sector counterparts and called on HR teams to engage more closely with business managers to reverse the trend.
The report is released as statistics published in the Guardian show wage growth in the public sector falling to its lowest in nearly a decade, with official data also showing the number of jobs in the sector dropping to a three-year low.
