Government spending on charities sees a “substantial rise”

Posted in News on the October 18th, 2007

Government spending on charity and voluntary organisations has risen, it has emerged.

In research released by the Office of the Third Sector, central government issued some £4.9 billion to the sector in 2003-04.

Meanwhile, local authorities have spent £4.3 billion.

And in news which may be of interest to those working in the voluntary sector aiming to attract staff via a regional recruitment portal, spending was shown to have risen between 2000-01 and 2003-04 at a faster rate of growth than overall government expenditure.

The report, carried out by the Charities Aid Foundation on behalf of the government, forms the latest in a series of studies which began in 1988.

Meanwhile, the foundation pointed out that there has been a "substantial rise" in funding for the community and voluntary sector from central and local government over recent years.

Filippo Addarii, from the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, reported that charities and non-governmental organisations need to look beyond their national borders if they are to develop successfully in the future.
