Voluntary sector does “sterling work”

Posted in News on the October 24th, 2007

Moves by the government to enhance the role that voluntary and charity organisations play in public life have been welcomed by one member of the Liberal Democrats.

Speaking at a parliamentary debate Norman Baker, MP for Lewes, praised the government’s move towards three-year funding, claiming that such a decision "is essential in giving stability to the voluntary sector".

Mr Baker also said: "All shades of opinion in the House recognise the sterling work delivered by charities, social enterprise units and others in our constituencies and throughout the country."

He added that the "world would be a poorer place" if it were not for those with jobs within the charity sector, news which could be welcomed by those looking to make best use of a regional recruitment portal.

However, the MP claimed that if more money is due to be spent by the third sector than it is crucial to ensure that such funds are being used wisely.

Earlier this month, research from the Office of the Third Sector revealed that central government spending on charities and voluntary bodies rose to some £4.9 billion during 2003-04.
