Public sector HR staff ‘need to work with others to achieve targets’

Human resources (HR) can play a crucial role in helping bodies, including those organisations operating in the public sector, meet their targets.

So says a new study released by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), which claims that HR officials in the public sector need to work closely with senior managers to develop strong leadership and to make the best use of talent pools. (more…)

Third sector asked to provide volunteer management feedback

Third sector organisations are being asked to provide feedback on a new set of standards regarding the managing of volunteers.

Under the National Occupational Standards, produced by the UK Workforce Hub, a new draft of updated standards has been released reflecting the challenges managers working for voluntary and community organisations may face, for example employee retention and risk management, reports the Third Sector. Government spending on charities sees a “substantial rise”

Government spending on charity and voluntary organisations has risen, it has emerged.

In research released by the Office of the Third Sector, central government issued some £4.9 billion to the sector in 2003-04.

Meanwhile, local authorities have spent £4.3 billion. (more…)

Public sector bodies need to “reflect the population they serve”

More needs to be done to open up talent pools for those applying for positions on public bodies, it has been suggested.

Commenting on the annual report by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments, Janet Gaymer, public appointments commissioner, claimed that the boards of those organisations operating in the public sector need to accurately reflect the wider community. (more…)

Charities ‘need global outlook’

Charities and non-governmental organisations need to look beyond national borders if they are to be successful in the coming years, it is being claimed.

At the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (Acevo) international conference, being held in London this week, delegates are due to be told that they must develop on a global scale and forge links with overseas network partners. (more…)
