Local authorities have “unprecedented” chance to develop communities

Posted in News on the November 20th, 2007

Local councils and their network partners are set to have more control over the development of their communities, it has emerged.

John Healey, minister for local government, has announced framework changes to Local Area Agreements (LAA) for those working in the public sector.

Now all Local Strategic Partnerships are to become involved with local residents when agreeing which priorities they want to tackle within their communities, before negotiating up to 35 targets with the government.

Meanwhile, a new local performance framework has been produced to provide a clear guide on working with LAAs for those working in the public sector.

He said: "These changes offer unprecedented opportunities for local leaders to set out a vision for their communities.

"This is not just about making sure services meet local need and demand. It is also about defining a future for the area and a vision of the good society."

In addition, 11 LAA demonstration areas are to be set up across the country to monitor how best to deliver "ambitious" agreements and to transfer learning to other areas.

Earlier this month, Mr Healey reported that the decision to cut down the amount of national indicators local authorities have to work towards will be of benefit to those working in the public sector.
