Online donations can help charities increase “donor loyalty”

Posted in News on the November 20th, 2007

Those working in the charity sector could increase loyalty among supporters by allowing them the ability to donate online, it has been suggested.

A study by the Center of Philanthropy at Indiana University revealed that although 65 per cent of respondents have given to a charity over the last 12 months, only a tenth have done so online.

About two-thirds of those surveyed stated that convenience is a major consideration when giving money online.

Despite the study taking place in the United States, Melissa Brown, associate director of research, claimed the findings could have implications for British charities.

She told the Third Sector: "Offering online giving options may be a way to build stronger donor loyalty."

Ms Brown added that charities should make sure that their websites are easy to use and clearly indicate how to donate, news which could be of interest to those operating in the voluntary sector looking to maintain sustainable efficiencies.

It was recently revealed that the newly-launched Charity Bank in the North is to give charities operating in the north of England increased financial advice.

More about sustainable efficiencies.
