Investment made into Supporting People initiative

Posted in News on the December 7th, 2007

Some £4.9 billion is to be released in funding for the Supporting People programme during the next three years, it has emerged.

In an announcement by communities minister Baroness Andrews, the investment will help more than a million vulnerable Britons live independently in accommodation each year, news that could be of interest to third sector bodies and those seeking social work jobs via a regional recruitment portal.

Meanwhile, allocations of funding will be based on need, with statistics about populations being updated regularly.

Baroness Andrews said: "The funding announced today will allow councils to continue helping over a million vulnerable people each year to live independently and break the cycle of deprivation and exclusion."

She added that basing the distribution on need will help the funding initiative to be more effective and provide greater flexibility.

In addition, Baroness Andrews claimed that the success of the scheme relies upon "continued effective delivery" by both local councils and those working for voluntary groups.

Last month, it emerged that the Unity Trust Bank had launched a £50 million social economy fund to provide financial aid to third sector organisations.
