BME leadership programme launched

Posted in News on the December 14th, 2007

A new mentoring initiative has been launched to help prepare black and minority ethnic staff (BMEs) for leadership roles within the civil service.

In news that could be of interest to those working in the public sector, the Growing Talent scheme by the Minority Ethnic Talent Association will see the 12 successful applicants paired with mentors from who have worked at director general level or as secretaries.

It is hoped that within four years, the programme will contribute towards the Cabinet Office’s aims to increase the diversity of those with senior roles in the service.

As a result, the news could be of interest to public sector leaders looking to boost the skills framework of staff from BME backgrounds.

Cabinet secretary Sir Gus O’Donnell told Personnel Today: "To meet the challenges of a constantly changing society and the increasing diversity of public service users, the civil service needs to ensure it has the right workforce with the right skills."

Earlier this year, public appointments commissioner Janet Gaymer reported that public bodies must accurately reflect the population that they serve.
