Home Office ‘to meet minority recruitment targets’

Posted in News on the December 17th, 2007

The Home Office is on track to meet targets regarding both the recruitment and retention of staff from ethnic minority backgrounds, new reports reveal.

According to the eighth annual Race Employment Targets Report, the Border and Immigration Agency, the Forensic Science Service, Identity and Passport Service and core Home Office areas have all exceeded their aims in boosting employment levels of people from minority groups.

The news may be of interest to those from such backgrounds seeking work in the public sector via a regional recruitment portal.

Home secretary Jacqui Smith said: "Having a diverse workforce at the Home Office is essential if we are to improve our understanding of the communities we serve and increase public confidence in the services we provide."

Meanwhile, 3.9 per cent of police officers are currently from ethnic backgrounds, with this figure targeted to reach seven per cent by 2009.

The news comes after it was revealed that a new mentoring initiative has been rolled out to prepare black and minority ethnic public sector staff for senior roles in the civil service.
