‘More should be done to improve employee skills’
This year should be one that sees a rise in employee training, a leading member of parliament has claimed.
According to John Denham, secretary of state for innovation, universities and skills, employers, including those working in the public sector, should look to do more to boost the skills framework of their staff.
Mr Denham pointed towards the £11 billion which was pledged last year towards various education, training and employment initiatives, Personnel Today reports.
Under the Train to Gain programme, employees now have the right to free basic skills training.
The minister called for "employers to engage with the structures we are putting in place to enable them to make skills training integral to their business", in addition to establishing links with further and higher education institutions to help provide the skills needed to help Britain compete on an international scale.
He added: "In the coming year, I look forward to working with employers and providers to bring about the culture change we need to ensure this partnership works to its full potential."
A recent study by the Association of Colleges revealed that 53 per cent of Britons, which may include those working in the public sector, believe that those working around them need more training to be effective in their jobs.
