Third sector centre to provide ‘authoritative basis’

Posted in News on the January 3rd, 2008

The funding agencies behind the independent research centre for the third sector have announced a number of services that the institution will provide.

With an investment of £10.25 million over five years to create the facility, the Office of the Third Sector, the Economic and Social Research council and the Barrow Cadbury Trust have reported that the centre will set up ‘knowledge transfer partnerships’, ThirdSector.co.uk reports.

Such a move is aimed at boosting information-sharing between academics and those working in the third sector and may help leaders operating for voluntary organisations increase the skills framework of their staff.

The centre will also be supported by three capacity-building clusters, in each of which a team of researchers will develop data and apply it to the third sector. In addition, the clusters are expected to help give students the chance to study for postgraduate qualifications to help them develop the skills needed by the sector.

Phil Hope, minister for the third sector, said: "The new centre will provide an authoritative basis for decisions by the sector and by those who commission public services or are the targets of its campaigns.

"I expect the centre to assist, engage and also to challenge both the sector and government."

Last year, third sector groups were invited to join a bursary scheme, operated by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, which aims to help such institutions win contracts for public services.
