Sustainability ‘can help boost public sector’s credibility’

Posted in News on the January 4th, 2008

Those working for the public sector need to do more to show they are taking sustainability seriously, new research shows.

In a study by BT, 19 per cent of those questioned believe that the sector is focusing the most on being environmentally and socially responsible.

However, some 43 per cent of public sector employees claim that their organisation is not doing enough.

Despite this, 63 per cent of such organisations claim they are taking "significant steps" to improve their impact on the environment, with a further 29 per cent reporting they are doing all that they can.

Mark Quartermaine, managing director for BT Government Services, said: "The research suggests UK public sector organisations have a lot of work to do to convince customers how seriously they take sustainability.

"A reputation for poor sustainability practices - whether justified or not - can impact on an organisation’s credibility."

Thus, sustainability efforts may be something public sector groups want to highlight when using a regional recruitment portal to attract candidates.

Last year, Filippo Addarii, of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, reported that charities and non-governmental organisations increasingly need to work with each other on both a national and international scale to maintain sustainable efficiencies.
