Local authorities ‘who deliver’ to receive funding boost

Posted in News on the January 17th, 2008

Those local authorities which have innovative and effective means of improving their area and increasing the number of jobs available could receive a grant, it has emerged.

Under a new government award programme for "raising prosperity", those working for such public sector bodies will be able to share a piece of £3 million.

The bodies may have to demonstrate how they are increasing the skills framework for their residents, apprenticeship rates and improving transport links to help increase the number of jobs available.

Upon receiving the award, such public sector bodies will be given ‘beacon’ status for a year and will offer advice to other local authorities.

Such news could also be welcomed by public sector leaders looking to improve sustainable efficiencies.

John Healey, local government minister, said: "I want councils who know their local area best to have a front-line role in delivering new jobs, skills and opportunities to local people - particularly in our most deprived areas, which have the most to gain."

Last month, the government announced that local authorities in England are to see an increase in spending of £8.97 billion during the next three years.

In 2008-09, such bodies will receive £70.4 billion, with this rising to £73.5 and £76.7 billion in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
