Umbrella groups welcome charity proposals

Two umbrella organisations representing people who work in the third sector have welcomed new guidance by the Charity Commission, it has emerged.

Both the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (acevo) and National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) have praised proposals by the commission for charities to demonstrate their value to members of the public.

From April 1st, such bodies must indicate an identifiable benefit in their activities and prove that such a benefit is targeted to people within the wider community.

Stephen Bubb, chief executive of acevo, said: "Maintaining public trust is crucial for the sector and it is right that those with charitable status should practically and publicly demonstrate the reasons for holding these privileges."

Chief executive of the NCVO Stuart Etherington also greeted moves by the commission.

Following his claims that "cost should not be a barrier to charity", it may be possible that charities and voluntary organisations are able to maintain sustainable efficiencies.

Earlier this month, justice minister Bridget Prentice claimed that, in conjunction with the government, voluntary bodies can achieve "real change" in society.

More about sustainable efficiencies.
