Welsh authorities to see funding increase

Posted in News on the January 24th, 2008

A total of £3.8 billion is to be invested into local authorities in Wales, it has been announced.

Earlier this week, Dr Brian Gibbons, local government minister, reported that in the final settlement for 2008-09 some £3.8 million in core funding will be ploughed into those working for such public sector bodies and the services that they deliver.

The announcement sees an extra £4.7 million be added on top of the provisional settlement which was reported previously.

Dr Gibbons said: "This settlement is a good and fair deal for both local government and council tax payers in a challenging period for public sector finances.

"I expect councils to act reasonably and responsibly in setting their budgets."

Now every local authority in Wales will see a settlement increase of at least two per cent, which may help such bodies maintain sustainable efficiencies.

Earlier this month, Rob Pickford, chief inspector for the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales, suggested that a "distinctive" social care sector is emerging in the principality as a number of services have improved during the past year.

More about sustainable efficiencies.
