Third sector groups ‘need to understand full range of costs’

Posted in News on the January 30th, 2008

Those working for charities should be conscious of the costs involved with taking on new volunteers, it has been claimed.

The Commission for the Compact and Volunteering England claimed that although people deciding to volunteer give their time freely, the process is not “cost-free”.

Helen Baker, interim commissioner for the Compact, told Third Sector.co.uk: “We want to help organisations in the third sector to understand the full range of costs associated with volunteers and to encourage them to recognise that it is legitimate to include the costs in funding applications.”

As such the institution has called on the government to provide financial assistance to third sector groups in raising their profile and encouraging people from minority backgrounds to volunteer.

Now the Compact is carrying out a study focusing on the costs of making volunteering easier for people from under-represented groups and how to cover all their expenses when applying for funds.

Following on from the report’s results, which are due to be released in the summer, charities may be able to improve their sustainable efficiencies.

Earlier this month, the Commission on the Future of Volunteering suggested that a minister representing the voluntary sector should be created.

More about sustainable efficiencies.
