JGP in partnership with the IDeA and DEFRA launch localenvironmentskills.org
www.localenvironmentskills.org goes live at ENCAMS’ Cleaner Safer Greener Conference held in Manchester.
Localenvironmentskills.org is the first of many planned sector specific Skills Portals. This site offers a complete online toolkit for people working within local environmental public services. It’s a publicly accessible website with the aim of raising skills among everyone involved in keeping the country clean and tidy. This ranges from Street Cleaners to Planners to Strategic Directors.
The website allows individuals to assess and develop their skills and progress on their chosen career path.
Localenvironmentskills.org has been delivered by JGP and developed by DEFRA’s Local Environmental Protection Team, drawing on the experience of several organisations to ensure its objectives are achieved. These partners include:
• ENCAMS (Environmental Campaigns)
• Asset Skills
• IDeA (Improvement and Development Agency)
• LGA (Local Government Association)
• WAMITAB (Waste Management Industry Training Advisory Board)
• Chartered Institute of Management
• CIWM (Chartered Institution of Wastes Management)
• APSE (Association of Public Sector Excellence)
• JGP
Essentially JGP has delivered an online Skills Portal, although typically a skills portal is ‘owned’ by an employer and has restricted access to staff members only; whereas Local Environment Skills boasts a ‘for all to use’ status.
JGP in partnership with the IDeA aims to deliver a number of sites for various sections of local government services. Street Cleaning is not the largest or the most glamorous but it is hoped that it will go some way to address and help skills shortages across sectors. Working in partnership with DEFRA and the IDeA it is hoped these sites can become go-to resources for the sector linking employers, jobseekers and training providers.
For JGP Local Environment Skills:
• Gives employers a ‘taster’ of the Skills Portal in terms of what it can do for them and how it can facilitate better team performance
• Allows candidates to make better career choices , view study programs or simply to stay in touch with what’s going on within their sector
