Charities asked for views on local councils

Posted in News on the March 10th, 2008

People working for charities are to be questioned on whether they believe their councils are doing enough to support them, it has been revealed.

In proposals by the department for communities and local government, it has emerged that a random selection of the 97,000 charities throughout England will be surveyed on how local authorities are creating "an environment for a thriving third sector".

The institutions surveyed will also be asked about the availability of resources, the effectiveness of links with network partners and how much support is offered by umbrella charity bodies.

Forming part of the department’s white paper, Strong and Prosperous Communities, the poll is a part of a wider assessment of the services that councils provide.

The first study will take place later this year in the autumn, with another survey to be conducted in 2010.

A recent study by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations revealed that the majority of charity and voluntary group executives believe their institutions will be able to cope successfully with the difficulties brought on by the recent credit crunch.
