Coaching ‘can assist with workforce development’

Posted in News on the March 26th, 2008

The majority of firms, which could include those working in the public sector, offer coaching, a new study has revealed.

Research carried out by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) indicated that about three-quarters of organisations provide such guidance.

Some two-fifths of those questioned offer the service to all employers, with over a third making this available solely to directors and members of senior management.

Following on from coaching, it is possible that organisations are able to improve the skills framework of their staff.

John McGurk, adviser in learning, training and development for the CIPD, said: "Coaching is a win-win situation in workforce development, offering the scope to help employees reach their potential, while improving competitiveness and productivity of the business as a whole."

However, it was also revealed that only eight per cent of firms evaluate the effectiveness of their coaching.

A recent Learning and Skills Council study revealed that over half of supervisors claim they would allow their workers to have time off to attend training programmes.
