Scottish charities ‘advised to work with local councils’

Changes in funding allocations for third sector organisations in Scotland should allow those with jobs at voluntary bodies to work more closely with the public sector, it has been claimed.

Paul White, director of networks at the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO), has welcomed the opportunity presented by the end of ring-fenced funding for Councils for Voluntary Service and Volunteer Centres set to occur in 2011.

Third Sector Online reports that earlier this month funding for the two groups totalling more than £22 million was announced.

However, the Scottish government would want umbrella organisations such as the SCVO and Volunteer Development Scotland to work more closely together from 2011, potentially providing an improved skills framework for those operating in the sector.

John Swinney, secretary for finance and sustainable growth in the Scottish government, commented: "Local authorities will in future have increased flexibility and will be able to divert any efficiency savings they make into local priorities."

Earlier this month, a number of third sector organisations in Scotland tasked with families, children and ex-offenders among others welcomed additional funding hoped to boost their sustainable efficiencies.
