Acevo calls for creation of third sector university

Posted in News on the April 15th, 2008

The case for the establishment of a university for the third sector has been heard, it has been revealed.

Speaking in London earlier this week, Stephen Bubb, chief executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (Acevo), claimed the creation of such an institution would help attract those looking for jobs in the third sector.

He said: "We need to invest in building on what already exists through research and training.

"The profile of the sector and the policy context we are operating in makes it an increasingly attractive choice for graduates."

As such, the Acevo executive stated that the university would help the sector to improve its skills framework and train the leaders of tomorrow for various charitable and voluntary organisations.

Mr Bubb also pointed out that there are the equivalent of 1.5 million full-time workers in the third sector and some six million full-time volunteers.

In related news, it was revealed that the Centre for Strategy and Communication and the Royal Holloway college of University of London is to offer a higher education certificate in leadership and management for those who are working for voluntary institutions and charities.
