Third sector ‘can connect with hard to reach individuals’

Posted in News on the April 16th, 2008

Social enterprises can be of assistance to those working in the third sector, it has been claimed.

According to Jim Mather, enterprise minister for the Scottish parliament, adopting such an enterprise business model can help charity and voluntary organisations to provide social and environmental benefits in a sustainable manner and use their income to supplement further growth.

Following on from taking this up it may be possible that third sector groups are able to maintain sustainable efficiencies.

He added: "The third sector is often best placed to connect with those individuals the public sector finds hardest to reach and to bring employment opportunities and income to individuals where the private sector doesn’t operate."

Mr Mather also pointed out that the parliament has announced a 37 per cent funding increase for the Scottish third sector.

His comments come following the announcement that Aberdeen-based recycling company Aye Can, which provides jobs for people with learning disabilities, is to be re-opened.

In recent news, it was revealed that the ICO fund, a subsidiary of social lender Co-operative & Community Finance, has generated more than £1 million in grants for social enterprises.

More about sustainable efficiencies.
