NCVYS advises accreditation for youth volunteers

Posted in News on the April 25th, 2008

People working for voluntary organisations involved with young people should have the chance to pursue qualifications and development opportunities, it has been suggested.

According to the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS), such volunteers should be required to have a portfolio of work indicating what training and experience they have. From here they would then receive a certificate or card identifying themselves as a volunteer youth worker, ThirdSector reports.

In a statement, the NCVYS pointed out: "Instead of restricting what a volunteer can do, we are proposing to reward achievement and incentivise volunteers to take up training and professional development opportunities."

It is possible that offering an accreditation scheme as a skills portal could help voluntary organisations to improve the skills of their workers.

The council’s claims follow plans by the Department for Children, Schools and Families to implement greater regulation towards the youth workforce.

At the beginning of this month, it was revealed that those looking to work with children and vulnerable adults will have to pay £64 to register with the Independent Safeguarding Authority and obtain a criminal record bureau enhanced disclosure.
