Charities ’should use older people’s skills’

Posted in News on the April 29th, 2008

Charities should be looking to improve their skills framework by attracting older people to work for their organisation, it has been suggested.

Karen Wisdom, research director at Ipsos Mori, reflecting on her own organisation’s latest study, said that there is a clear opportunity for charities to tap in to the skills and experience of retired people across Britain.

According to the research, in excess of one in five people in the UK aged over 45 would give consideration to the idea of doing volunteer work, in news that may be of interest to those working for charity and voluntary groups.

Chris Ball, chief executive of the Age and Employment Network, said: "Working in the voluntary sector is one of the options retired people are increasingly considering.

"Skills and experience can blend with social values of organisations that people can believe in, and offer a stimulating third-age career."

Earlier this month, a study released by KPMG suggested that retaining skilled staff is becoming an increasingly important area of focus for employers in the UK, including those in the charity sector.
